Science Fair Proposal

Q: 1. What is your hypothesis?
A: My hypothesis is: If P.acne is exposed to a certaion chemical, then it will not grow as quickly.
Q: 2. Identify the dependent (produced), independent (manipulated) and control variables in your hypothesis.
A: The dependent variable is the are free of bacteria. The independent variable in the type of acne medication I’m going to use which is clinque. The control variables will be room temperature, the concentration of the product clinque and the ingredients in the petri dish.
Q: 3. What is the connection between your science fair project and your senior project EQ?
A: My EQ is, what is the best way of taking care of teenagers skin? So the connection between my science fair and my EQ is helping me prove that clinque is one of the best ways to get rid of unwanted acne on ones face.
Q: 4. How will you perform the experiment?  Include the equipment you plan on using.
A:
material list:
  • 3 petri dishes with agar
  • 1 disinfected swab
  • 1 bottle of clean water
  • piece of filter paper (1)
  • 4 test tubes
  • measuring cylinder
  • pippette
  • beaker of water
  • P acne bacteria
  • forceps
  • digital weighing scale
  • clinque
Procedure:
  • First, I will prepare three petri dishes and put agar in them and store them in a refrigerator, before starting the experiment I will remove the petri dishes from the refrigerator and wait till they are back to room temperature.

  • Second, I will use the pippette to mix the acne medication with water. I will use 5mg of clinque and 10 ml of water.

  • Third, I will prepare another test tube containing the P acne bacterium with 40 ml of water. I will take a swab and wipe it to the tub containing the bacteria and spread it all around the agar.
  • Fourth, I cut out circular discs out of the filter paper than dip the filter paper into the test tube containing the acne medication. They are kept in a cool, shaded place for four days.
  • After the four days have passed i will measure the circular area on the filter paper that is free of bacteria.
Q: 5. Which category will your project be listed under?

A: Biochemistry and Molecular Biology.
